A Letter From Buffalo Jack
I don't know why I have such a passion for the American Bison, which I always refer to as buffalo. In my youth I worked in Grand Teton and Yellowstone Parks and on occasion I would come across buffalo. One incident was when a friend told me of a place where every evening a bull would come to browse. This place was an open area in the woods a little distance off the road. One early evening I went by myself to see if I could find him. When I reached the area where the woods opened up, there he stood. I was motionless. My instincts told me to stay in the cover of the trees. I don't know how long I was there, but the experience is still with me. I think with every painting I make, a little bit of that buffalo is there.
